Social Networking Sites: A Big Help for the Typhoon Victims in the Philippines
Recently, our country, the Philippine have been ravished by 2 destructive typhoons (Ketsana and Parma) that killed a little under 300 persons and displaced thousands if not millions of people. It basically sub-merged in water most of the area’s in Luzon. Both typhoons destroyed infrastructure such as bridges, roads, electric posts and left thousands of people homeless. It was the worst typhoon to ever hit the Philippines. It was noted that the rain being poured by the typhoon for the 1st 6 hours was equivalent to already a month’s worth of rain.
During those trying times in my country, one can notice an increase on usage of social networking sites in the Philippines. People where Facebook and Twitter to spread information regarding rescue operations, important contact numbers, updates from the government and even those who are trapped in their respected homes have used these sites to ask for help. I have never thought in my entire life that these social networking sites can play a vital role during calamities. This goes to show how Information Technology can help to make our world a better home. Information Technology is powerful and let’s put it to good use. I say my prayers to all my Kababayans who are affected by the typhoons. God Bless you all.
