Fire .. Fire .. Fire ..

When we finished taking our lunch at the foodcourt, one of my friend got a call. The call was from our other classmate who told us that their house (apartment) was on fire. Upon hearing the news, we suddenly rushed in to the scene. We took 3 taxis and its like the whole IT3 class went there. When we got there, we were shocked by the devastation that the fire has caused. There were i think 4 - 5 apartments that were burned down. Sadly, my classmate’s apartment was the one who suffered the most damage. But the saddest part would be that they were not able to save any of their belongings. Also, their  beloved pet dog named Defy perished into the fire. I feel very sorry for them. May this experience serve as a reminder and a lesson for us. I admit that when it comes to fire prevention, i am really not so serious about it. But upon seeing the experience of my classmate, it made me more aware about the devastation that a fire can make. So it is really best to follow fire prevention tips for us to avoid tragedy.

Here are some fire prevention tips:

1.) Don’t overload extension cords or run them under rugs.

2.) Replace any cord that is cracked or frayed. If an appliance smokes or has an unusual smell, unplug it and have it repaired by a professional.

3.) Never leave candles burning unattended or burning around small children or pets. If you do use candles, keep them in proper glass containers.

4.) Keep grills at least three feet away from other objects, including the house and any shrubs or bushes.

5.) Douse cigarette and cigar butts with water before dumping them in the trash.

6.) Unplug all electrical wire when leaving the house.

DoTA: A Competitive Sport

Of all the famous and most played games of this era, only one stands at the top most spot and that game is DOTA. Played by children from as young as 12 years of age, to adults and even married people. Wherever internet cafe you go to, you can always see, hear and feel the prescence of battle and excitement that DoTA provides. A game that was developed and founded by the creative mind of Eul. DOTA or DoTA is mainly a customed map of Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne which is played with warcraft characters and skills. The game is battled by to sides, the Sentinel which represents the good side and the Scourge which are the evil ones. DoTA is so dynamic that you can choose from many different heroes that has 4 different skills, can hold 6 slots of different items and has different style of playing. The game is also constantly being updated with new maps to fix bugs, keep the game balance, and to add new features. Also DoTA is famous for it’s trashtalking nature which makes the game more fun and excitement.

DoTA is not only an ordinary game that is played just for entertaining purposes. It has become a competitive sport wherein competitions and tournaments are being setup. Competitive DoTA is really the trend and there is really a big money at stake. Players develop skills in creating strategy, decision making and most important of all, teamwork. I personally experienced being in a DoTA tournament and the feeling is really quite nervous but exciting. DoTA does not only require your hands to play, it also requires you to use your mind. You need to have prescence of mind and excellent micro handling skills to be a good player for the team. In summary, DoTA has become a competitive sport wherein every player or team must have a wire range of skills in micro handling and teamwork and competes for prize and fame. Though there are a lot of issues regarding DoTA as an addictive game and can really disrupt education, DoTA is still a good favorite past time sporting game. And DoTA has trully become one of the best games ever developed. GG!

Preventing Wireless Theft through Multi-Layered Encryption and Self-Deleting Data using C#

Our group thesis is all about Wireless Technology Security. There is a growing trend of coffee shops here in Davao that are using Wifi Technology to attract customers into their shops. Business firms and organizations are also shifting to this technology because of it’s accesibility and faster data processing. The downside of this is that Data is more vulnerable to hackers. As you can see, the technology uses radio signals to transmit data to another pc or laptop. The vulnerability of data is very much high while it is airborne. A lot of “Sniffer” software and hardware are now being developed by hackers to grab data while it is on the air. Imagine what would happen to a wireless bank transaction if it was hacked. Millions and billions of money will be lost just because of a security leak in the technology. As of now, i have not yet heard of an effective solution to this problem and so it came to our mind that what if we make an alternative security method to protect data while it is airborne. The concept is to make a software that will encrypt the data and hidden inside the encryption is the script that will automatically get information of the pc or laptop that the file is in. If the specifications does not match the desired specifications, then the script would first erase the pointer of the system to the data and then the data would set itself to NULL meaning the data is then deleted. We are not yet really sure on what specifications should be determined but we are assuming that it should be IP address and MAC address.

To explain more about the concept ..

We have Person A who would like to send data to Person B. While Person A sends the data to person B, Person C (hacker) using sniffer technology grabs the data unnoticed while it is airborne. Because Person C is not the correct destination of the file, the file then deletes itself making the data useless for Person C to use thus protecting the data.

Steve Nash and the Phoenix Suns: Hungry for a Championship

With the start of the 2007-2008 NBA season, Nash and the Suns are again on a conquest to grab the Larry O’ brien Trophy. With about 2 years of failed attempts to grab the trophy, Nash and Suns are again aiming to be on top and be NBA world champions. I personally like the system of the Suns especially their Run and Gun gameplay. Their fast-paced style of play, add up the incredible passing skills of Nash make them one of the most entertaining teams to watch. Being the top scoring team, they have a team scoring average of over 100+ points per game. They are also one of the leading teams in terms of assists thanks to the excellent passing skills of two-time MVP Steve Nash. But despite of this, something is still missing in the team. The Suns lack team defense which is a very crucial factor for success in basketball. As what NBA hall of famers often say, “You can win a lot of games with offense but you can win a championship with defense”.  A lot of people criticize the Suns for being a very good team in the elimination round and yet very poor on the playoffs. I still hope and believe that someday the Suns will be able to reach their goal as NBA champs and that Nash will regain his crown as NBA MVP.

Silicon Gulf: Pinoy Version of Silicon Valley

Have you ever heard of a place named ”Silicon Valley”? Well if your an IT student, then you should be familiar with this place. The place is full of high-tech gadgets and IT centers. It is also the center for innovation and software development. Isn’t that place so cool? Luckily, some famous IT people here in Davao got the initiative to create a remake of Silicon Valley in the US and they named it “Silicon Gulf”. Instead of using the word “Valley”, they used “Gulf” to represent the geographical location of where Davao is. Silicon Gulf was formed because of the growing number of IT companies and schools all over Davao. The primary aim was to unite all IT students and professionals and to make Davao as the center for IT research and development. As of now, the group meets at Fwends Diner located at Metro Avenue behind Gaisano Mall of Davao. We have some bonding sessions and IT seminars and tutorials. All you need to know about Information Technology and Computers is here. I am very happy and proud to be a part of this group and i hope that many more will join us.
